Initially designated as "Fuji-Hakone National Park" in 1936, integrating the Izu Peninsula in 1955 and the Izu Islands in 1964, the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park commemorated its 80th anniversary in 2016 with a project, branded as "100 Scenes with Mt. Fuji", in which the Ministry of Environment, together with local governments, designated 104 best viewpoints to observe Mt. Fuji (see the map below), being the conspicuous icon of the region and Japan, to further promote visitor use and international recognition.

While the selection actually includes a few sites outside the national park territory (such as Oshino-Hakkai or Sengen Shrine) and serve as an extensive guide for Mt. Fuji enthusiasts, some surroundig areas (eg. in Gotemba city to the southeast) are completely omitted for simply marginally or not or belonging to the park.
